Worlds Within Our World: Documentary Shorts, 90 min. Our second annual collection of stories that focus on the arts, the environment, forgotten history, resilience and new ways at looking at things we may see every day but ignore, from the streets of Los Angeles and New York City to Alaska and the Deep South. Films include: Marris Curran’s “The Man Is the Music” (19 min.) An inspiring look at the musician and found-object artist Lonnie Hollie. Brian Smee’s “Big Surf” (8 min.) An animated documentary that relives a forgotten flood in L.A. in 1928 that took hundreds of lives. Ric Serena’s “Noatak” (14 min.) 35 years after their first trip down the pristine Noatak River in northern Alaska, two adventurers are still going strong. Frances Bohn and Tom Koester’s “L.A./Complex: The Art of Jim Barrett” (23 min.) A look at L.A. artist Jim Barrett’s monumental WAR/COMPLEX alterpiece. Los Angeles Premiere! Tobia Sempi’s “Manifattura” (3 min.) In our world of conspicuous consumption, Nicolas Luciani is a Venice shoemaker who creates new wearable works of art out of second-hand shoes. “The Tables” (15 min.) A pair of outdoor ping-pong tables in the heart of New York City bring together an unlikely group of people, from the homeless to investment bankers to gangbangers. Discussion following with filmmakers from all the shorts.
