Walking Tour of Adelaide Drive

Our Walking Tour of Adelaide Drive celebrates the history and architecture of Santa Monica’s premier street. From Craftsman to Deconstructivism, the tour showcases a century of Adelaide’s life through architectural styles and the stories of its residents. Take in breathtaking ocean and hillside vistas as our docents guide you along the tour route. Enjoy exterior views of the Frank Gehry residence among others, stroll beside beautiful Torrey pines and ornate lampposts, and step inside two open houses at 130 and 518 Adelaide Drive.
In the early 20th century, wealthy pioneer families built their coastal homes on Adelaide Drive. Today, five of these residences are still standing as designated landmarks. Current Adelaide residents include artist Don Bachardy, architect Frank Gehry, animator/cartoonist Matt Groening and author Mona Simpson.
Today, Adelaide Drive retains much of the elegance of its early days, thanks to the work of property owners and preservationists who value its historic nature. However, nearby high-rise condominiums on Ocean Avenue remind us that, although change is inevitable, a balanced effort to preserve our historic heritage is also important.
