Santa Monica Symphony
Guido Lamell
Mahler 5th Symphony in C sharp minor
Barnum Theater – 600 Olympic Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405
The Santa Monica Symphony is proud to present Mahler’s Fifth Symphony at Santa Monica High School’s historic Barnum Theater on Saturday, December 14, 2019.
A pre-concert lecture by KUSC’s Rich Campanella begins 7 pm, the music starts at 7.30 pm.
The works of composer Gustav Mahler are intricate and complex and beautiful beyond words. His famous 5th symphony, one of his purely orchestral pieces, is a celebration of his newfound love and marriage. Mahler had suffered a nearly fatal hemorrhage, while recovering at a beautiful lakeside villa, he fell passionately in love and married. This piece was written as his new wife was expecting their first child and he felt joy and happiness. The work is infused with a dazzling array of emotions; from the opening funeral march to the famous fourth movement, Adagietto, which is a love letter to his wife, Alma. The Adagietto is familiar to many as it has been part of movies such as Death in Venice, Rules Don’t Apply and was played at the funeral mass of Robert F. Kennedy.
The mission of the Santa Monica Symphony is to provide Carnegie Hall caliber classical music performances at no cost. “All our concerts are always free to all,” says Guido Lamel, musical director and conductor. “The Santa Monica Symphony orchestra is the only community orchestra that welcomes anyone who wishes to attend with no ticket charge. We are celebrating our 75th year of providing outstanding and beautiful music to our community.”
