Catch Frau Fiber’s regiment of Faux Fraus leading sewing, altering and repurposing projects each month. Sewing machines and sewing tips included. As always, participants are welcome to bring their own projects and mending, or work on collage and other crafts.
The featured Sewing Rebellion project for September-December is ‘Motifs, Migrations and Misappropriations,’ a thoughful dive into how fast fashion exploits traditional motifs and patterns – how those patterns cross borders while the people who created them cannot. The project guides participants in transforming T-shirts into caftan shirts based on a Syrian caftan from the textile museum in Washington DC. Frau Fiber’s campaign around this theme can be seen this year at North Dakota State University’s Memorial Union Gallery, the Textile Museum at George Washington University, and Punkt ø in Moss, Norway.
Craft Lounge is a monthly no-host gathering of all types of crafting – bring your works in progress and make something with your neighbors! The Camera Obscura Art Lab has shared knitting, crochet, sewing, collage and drawing materials and plenty of tables for you to spread out your work.
Camera Obscura Art Lab is a program of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs #ArtSaMo
