Double Feature: WEIRD SCIENCE, 1985, Universal, 94 min. Dir. John Hughes. Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith play nerds who feed a centerfold into a computer and generate their own real-life fantasy woman in the form of Kelly Le Brock. As she teaches the boys how to be men, they deal with a number of comic complications and supporting characters, including a hilarious Bill Paxton.
THE DARK BACKWARD, 1991, Sony Repertory, 101 min. Dir. Adam Rifkin. Judd Nelson is Marty Malt, a garbage collector moonlighting as a stand-up comic in a Lynchian netherworld where opportunism rules the day. Friend and fellow garbage man Gus (Bill Paxton, in one of his most underrated performances) seems eager to help, but Marty’s comedy career only takes off after a third arm starts growing out of his back. Costarring Wayne Newton, James Caan and Rob Lowe, this relentlessly grimy satire is one of the strangest films of the 1990s.
