Art and Design at Fire Station 1

The Santa Monica Public Library and Santa Monica Cultural Affairs invites you to a conversation to mark the one-year anniversary of the new Fire Station 1 facility.
Join Architect Rob Quigley, Artist Deborah Aschheim and Santa Monica Deputy Fire Chief Tom Clemo as they discuss the innovative open design that (when the pandemic allows) invites the public into the heart of the building, the architect’s work integrating art, design and function, and the multifaceted artwork entitled “Back Story” that was the result of Aschheim’s multi-year embedded residency in the life of the fire station. The conversation is moderated by Public Art Supervisor Naomi Okuyama.
One aspect of “Back Story” is a book featuring heartfelt interviews and watercolors depicting the fire station crew; copies of which will be available at the Main Library Lobby Info Desk and Pico and Montana Branch Libraries curbside pickup starting June 7, 2021. Reservation holders can pick their free copy up before the talk – limited quantity, first come first served. The book can also be viewed online.
Fire Station 1 opened July 14, 2020, replacing the previous facility which opened in 1955.
Back Story was commissioned by the City of Santa Monica Percent for Art Program, a project of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs and the Santa Monica Arts Commission.
Rob Wellington Quigley Architects is a full service architecture and planning firm with offices in San Diego and Palo Alto and was established in 1978.
